The Awakening - Zodiac Academy #1 by Caroline Peckham, Susanne Valenti

Book Description

I’m a Gemini. Impulsive. Curious. Headstrong. A twin. Heir to a throne I know nothing about. And it turns out, I’m Fae.

But of course there’s a catch - all I have to do to claim my birth right is prove that I’m the most powerful supernatural in the whole of Solaria. And sure, technically that’s true as I’m the daughter of the Savage King. But the bit they didn’t put in the brochure was that every single Fae in this Kingdom would claim my throne if they could.

The school they’ve sent me to is both dangerous as sh*t and one helluva party. Vampires bite weaker students in the corridors, the Werewolf pack has orgies in the Wailing Wood at every full moon and don’t even get me started on the dark and twisted ways the Sirens use their powers on people’s emotions, or how my sinfully tempting Cardinal Magic teacher hosts detentions that leave people needing therapy.

Classes are totally interesting if you manage to live through them. And that Gemini star sign I mentioned? It now determines my elemental magic and affects my destiny, so learning astrology is essential if I’m going to beat down my classmates – which is actively encouraged by the way.

My biggest problem is the drool worthy Dragon shifter who has his eyes on my throne. He and his three psycho friends are determined to make my time here hell.

All I’ve got to do is survive. But fate might have other ideas. Dammit, why couldn’t I have gotten a letter to Hogwarts?

***This is a dark, bully romance – don’t go expecting a sweet school for magic with friends around every corner. Fae fight for everything they own and Zodiac Academy is a cutthroat school for students aged 18+ where only the strongest prevail. There’s no Dumbledore here to save anyone’s ass and Lionel Acrux will give Voldemort a run for his money in the evil dictator category. So hold onto your stardust (broomsticks not required) and get ready for a bumpy ride***

My Summary

Evidently, I prefer to read books that I feel to my core - the good, the bad - all the emotions. Being a romantic even when I am reading parts of a story that crush me, I continue to read optimistically hopeful that the story results in a happy ending, of course. The twins are Tori and Darcy. Tori is dark while Darcy is light. Tori is jaded and cynical, while Darcy is genuinely good and hopeful. One of the things that I love about this story is that both of them, are tremendously strong: emotionally, physically and magically! Such an interesting story to contemplate the ideology of nature versus nurture. They both were in the exact same environment, yet they are unique and different.

If you are completely against any type of bullying, this series, but especially this book is not for you. I believe this book was the first book I read by the talented sisters Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti.

While there are moments of this book that brought me absolute joy, I will confess that this book does not end in that happy ending I seek, nor does the 2nd, or 3rd, etc. but I remain cautiously optimistic that I will get that happy ending at the end of this series. Right sisters??!!?? Pretty Please!

One of the questions asked constantly is what order to read the Ruthless Boys and the Zodiac Academy. Here is what I did. The first time I read Zodiac Academy Book 1- 8. Then I read Ruthless Boys series. When the released date of Book 9 of Zodiac Academy I opted to reread both series starting with the Ruthless Boys, then Zodiac Academy. In hindsight, by reading Zodiac Academy first, I missed lots of the easter eggs and references that these masterful authors hid throughout each book. My recommendation is to read Ruthless Boys series first, then the Zodiac Academy series.

Notable Quotes

"Tears never did anyone any favours, but sometimes the just needed to fall."

"Flying through the clouds seemed like its own beautiful kind of freedom and I knew that if I could experience it even once then I'd be able to die having a life fulfilled."

"Ignore the dimples, Tory, he's an award winning dickasaurus."
